The Renault 4, or more commonly known simply as the R4, revolutionized the Renault range when it was released in 1961. In contrast to VW, Renault had recognized around ten years earlier that rear-engined vehicles did not have much of a future and switched the entire car range from rear-engined vehicles to front-wheel drive vehicles. The R4 was the first “new Renault” and also the first car with four doors, an additional tailgate and a folding rear seat. When the car was presented at the IAA in Germany in September 1961, it was definitely one of the most interesting cars of the year and was promptly voted Car of the Year 1961. The robustness of the technology is legendary and the driving pleasure provided by the engine, gearshift, chassis and brakes should be included in the specifications as a development goal for modern small cars today. The space, practical utility, reliability and driving pleasure made the R4 popular from the ’60s to the ’90s. The R4 proved to be so practical and superior to the competition that, in addition to France, it was also built in Angola, Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Ireland, Yugoslavia, Colombia, Madagascar, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia, Uruguay and Zaire. In total, there were 28 production sites for this global car! After production had already been stopped in almost all plants, the official production stop in France took place before the Christmas holidays in 1992. By then, 8,135,424 vehicles had been built. However, some vehicles were still built in the former Yugoslavia until 1994, until the Balkan War put an end to these activities too. After 33 years, the construction period ended, but the R4 had become a legend in the meantime.

We got this R4 GTL from Croatia in 2022 for a customer from Berlin. The car was completely dismantled and rebuilt there two years earlier. A Renault 4 is part of the national cultural heritage in the countries that used to belong to Yugoslavia – in all countries of the old Yugoslavia, i.e. across cultures, because until the outbreak of the Balkan War, Renault had an assembly plant in Slovenia. This vehicle was also built in Slovenia and first registered on November 28, 1989 in Zatvoreni in Serbia. On January 18, 2011, the car was then registered in Vinkovci in Croatia. Vinkovci is located in what is now the border triangle of Croatia/Serbia/Bosnia-Herzegovina and is only about 70 kilometers from Hungary. The car is, in a sense, a testament to both the history of Yugoslavia and the reconciliation after the Balkan War. The car is both a piece of old Europe and a symbol of the new Europe at the same time. Photos of the work in Croatia are available and of course also of the work we have carried out since 2022. The owner has now bought a Renault 5 Alpine Turbo from us and has therefore given us the R4 for sale again. Before we included the car in our offer, we had the drive cuffs and the shaft seals replaced and had a new general inspection carried out. The symbol of European history is actually only waiting for registration in its name.

The Économie offer for €13,500 refers to the tested and roadworthy vehicle with an H report and a general inspection valid until January 2027. The standard offer for €14,600 also includes an inspection with lubrication service and an oil change. The Suprême offer for €15,700 also includes cavity and underbody preservation with wax.
