The Saab 900 was built in four model variants from 1978 to 1994. The body variants included three- and five-door combi coupés, four-door saloons (called sedans) and, from 1986, four-seater convertibles. The first series was built until 1981, the second until 1986 and the third until 1994. From the third series onwards, the vehicles had an aerodynamically inclined front section. The combi coupé was produced up to and including 1993 and the convertible until 1994. In 2000, the American car company General Motors took over Saab and from then on had mainly Opel technology installed in the Swedish cars. Three years after the takeover by General Motors, the successful but no longer profitable 900 model was discontinued and replaced by a successor of the same name, which, however, was technically and visually fundamentally different from its predecessor due to the floor pan used from the Opel Vectra. Despite or because of the takeover by GM, Saab’s financial situation did not improve. In 2010, GM sold the company to the Dutch small-series sports car manufacturer Spyker Cars, which had to file for bankruptcy on December 19, 2011. The era of the 900 model, with which designer Björn Envall created a monument, is today seen as the “golden” era of Saab. In recent years, the price level for all 900s up to 1994 has risen sharply and good cars with powerful turbo engines are approaching €30,000 and corresponding convertibles even €40,000 and more. However, very good, original cars are now hard to find.

This Saab 900 Turbo 16 convertible was first registered in Germany on August 27, 1987 and subsequently had three owners in Switzerland. The third owner, a professor, had the leather and the top professionally refurbished in 2018. He also had the rear bumper repainted. The condition of the vehicle is fascinating and you really have to look for signs of wear. The only thing is a small chrome plug in the trunk lid that covers a former antenna hole for an old car phone. The mileage of 108,453 kilometers was passed down orally and there is no reason to question it. When you see the car, it is hard to imagine that it should have been driven 100,000 kilometers. Everything on the car, including the air conditioning, works perfectly. Even the top shows no signs of wear. The front end of the hood even still has the original matt black stone chip protection sticker, which you hardly find on any Saab 900 anymore. We therefore even assume that the convertible still has its factory paintwork. In 2021 we got the car from Switzerland and sold it to a customer in Berlin. Since then, the convertible has always been with us for maintenance. Because the owner hardly has any time for the car and has only driven 1,361 kilometers with it since 2021, he has given the good piece to us for sale again. Björn’s masterpiece – Björns Mästerverk.
