Déesse Idéale

When the Déesse (French for goddess) was presented at the 1955 Paris Motor Show, l’auto-journal’s headline was “The bomb has exploded!” And what a bomb it was, because by the end of the show over 80,000 sales contracts had been signed! In just under twenty years of production, 1,455,746 examples of this model were sold. With its unusual design, hydropneumatic suspension, high-pressure brakes, power steering, semi-automatic gearbox, spare wheel in the engine compartment and many other details, the DS was probably the biggest sensation in automobile construction ever. For the ’66 model year, the DS Pallas was added to the “normal” DS. Technically exactly the same, the Pallas was characterized by a more luxurious interior with thicker seats and carpets and, on the outside, considerably more chrome trim. For the 1967 model year, all models were given a differently designed front with double headlights behind a glass, one pair of which is connected to the steering via cables – the famous cornering light of the DS was born! At the end of the 1960s, a DS Pallas was the most comfortable car ever and was recognized as a benchmark by Mercedes and Jaguar. To this day, we know of no car that “irons out” the bumps in the road surface better than a DS.

For many of today’s prospective buyers, this DS 23 Pallas is the ideal DS. In other words, a noble DS Pallas with the largest engine, but no fuel injection system and a 5-speed manual transmission instead of the semi-automatic transmission. In combination with the exquisite leather interior and the tinted glass, it has everything that can make a DS special, but not the things that can mean a high maintenance effort. For better use in today’s traffic, four retractable seat belts, headrests and seat heating were retrofitted at the front. The contemporary radio also has a connection for modern digital media. The car was commissioned by a gentleman from Baden-Württemberg to be restored to his specifications by DS specialist Dirk Sassen in Düsseldorf. We know the Sassen company very well and, last but not least, we owe a significant part of our Citroën DS expertise acquired over the last twenty years to Dirk Sassen and would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sassen team. The restoration work on this car took several years and was only completed just under three years ago. The owner of the vehicle moved from Baden-Württemberg to Potsdam this year and his new job no longer leaves him any time for the car, so he has given it to us for sale. An ideal DS – Déesse Idéale.
