The 505 model followed the extremely successful 504 in 1979, of which over 3.3 million were built in Europe between 1968 and 1983. The 505 was the better and, above all, more spacious vehicle, but the time for large numbers of such cars was already over due to the diversification in the model policy of the car industry that was already beginning. Nevertheless, a good 1.3 million units of the 505 were built up to 1992. In contemporary test reports, the 505 was always highly praised and was compared with German rear-wheel drive vehicles such as the Mercedes W123 and the BMW E28. The 505 was often the test winner. The reliability is certainly comparable to that of the Mercedes and the driving pleasure is definitely on a par with the BMW, but the comfort is certainly better than that of the two competitors. From 1982 onwards there were the 4.9 metre long station wagon versions Break and Familiale, with a wheelbase of 15.7 cm and a rear body overhang of 16.2 cm longer than the sedans. The station wagons are therefore 31.9 cm longer than the sedans. Together with the steep rear, this creates an almost gigantic loading area of 2.36 metres with the rear seat folded down. The longer wheelbase even means that the rear doors are longer than on the sedans, making loading from the side easier. The folding mechanism for the rear seat is ingeniously simple and can really be operated with one hand in two steps. In addition to the “normal” Break with two rows of seats, there was also, as is usual with Peugeot, a variant with three rows of seats, the so-called Familiale, which was approved as a seven-seater. In order to make the loading floor as low as possible, the station wagons even have a different rear axle to the sedans. No other manufacturer today puts such effort into the design of their station wagons. Instead, there are SUVs that are large on the outside, but whose loading capacity and practical utility are nowhere near comparable to a 505 station wagon. Show and pomposity are the main focus today and you can still avoid this questionable trend and buy real classic station wagons – which is more sustainable than making a new car. But you first have to find a really good 505 station wagon. Our company’s fleet has included two 505s for years and these cars have never let us down, despite the approximately 20,000 km that both cars drive per year.
This 505 Break is a relatively late model with SX equipment, which is based on the GL equipment, but is equipped with Amil alloy wheels, velour seats, power steering and, above all, the 2.2-liter engine of the GTI. The car, which was already equipped with a regulated exhaust catalytic converter, was first registered on November 14, 1990 to a carpentry shop in Saarlouis in Saarland. This means that it is a vehicle that was first delivered to Germany. The carpentry shop had occasionally used the car to transport larger workpieces and had placed a wooden board over the cargo area with the rear seat folded down. In 2018, the carpenter’s heirs offered the vehicle for sale at a mileage of 44,883, and a collector from North Rhine-Westphalia drove to Saarlouis with a friend who works as a vehicle appraiser at DEKRA. The wooden board was still installed and after it was removed, it became apparent that the rear seats had probably been folded down under the wooden board for almost three decades. The overall condition of the car is not only absolutely original, but also outstandingly good, and the rear seat and footwell in the rear are as good as new. The collector of French cars from NRW registered the car in January 2020 and re-registered it with an H license plate in February 2021. At that time, the catalytic converter, which is not necessary for an H registration, was removed. However, the lambda control is still active and so we could of course reinstall the catalytic converter in the interests of environmental protection. Since the collector has to give up the hall in which he stores his cars, he has given us this fascinating station wagon for sale. The current mileage is 47,439 kilometers. In issue 10/2021 of Auto Bild Klassik, a comparison of classic station wagons (Ford Granada 2.3, Mercedes 200 T, Volvo 245 2.3 and Peugeot 505 2.2) was published. The Peugeot that was used there is this car that we are allowed to offer here. It came in second place, just behind the Mercedes. However, its comfort, roadholding, driving pleasure and load capacity are superior and the car has been described as the balanced one.
Our Économie offer for €19,000 refers to the tested and roadworthy vehicle with the engine compartment already blasted with dry ice and a general inspection that expired in August 2024. The standard offer for €21,900 also includes a major inspection with oil change, the retrofitting of a previously removed exhaust catalytic converter, and a new general inspection. The Suprême offer for €23,800 includes paint polishing with sealing, cavity and underbody preservation, and repainting the slightly scratched front spoiler. We would be happy to send you a detailed list of the three offers.
