After the end of the Second World War, BMW got into difficulties that were, one might say, not its fault. Vehicle development, management and motorcycle production were in Munich, but the factory where the cars were made was in Eisenach, and the Soviet occupation of central Germany meant that BMW no longer had access to its car factory. In addition, there was no affordable vehicle to offer for the post-war period. BMW tried to participate in the beginning of the economic miracle with the luxury sedans 501 and 502, also known as the “Baroque Angels”, but this did not really work. The company had to sell the elegant sedans at prices that did not make any money. In 1955, the license for the “cuddly ball” Isetta was bought, a pleasant vehicle, but it did not make any money. At least BMW was able to stay afloat with the Isetta and the two-cylinder models 600 and 700, but this could not last for long. The “New Class” introduced in 1961 saved BMW, because it was finally possible to make money again with this sporty, modern sedan. Shortly afterwards, the Borgward Group from Bremen had to file for bankruptcy, and BMW was thus able to poach the territory of the Borgward Isabella drivers with the New Class almost from scratch and was suddenly almost unrivaled. The 1500 model of the New Class was soon joined by the 1600, 1800 and 2000. When Hubert Hahne won one victory after another in racing with the New Class from 1964 onwards, BMW was once again successful. In 1966, the problem with production capacity was also resolved, because the Bavarian manufacturer Glas was taken over and its factory in Dingolfing was gradually expanded into the main BMW plant. The successor to the New Class was the first BMW 5 Series from 1972 onwards, and BMW was once again a very serious car manufacturer.

This BMW 2000 tilux was first registered in Portugal on August 19, 1968. In 2022, the car was bought by a collector of sporty German sedans and coupes from the 1960s and ’70s and brought to Berlin. In Berlin, the car received a thorough inspection and has since been occasionally driven with the collector’s red license plates. Unfortunately, all we know about the car’s history in Portugal is that it was repainted there at some point. Unfortunately, we know nothing about the number of owners in Portugal and the mileage of the BMW. The paintwork on the car does not quite meet the standard we are used to, but there is no urgent work to be done on the body or the paint. Technically, the car is also in good condition and ready for immediate use. However, for an MOT, the tires, the stabilizer bushings at the front and the shock absorbers at the rear would have to be replaced – our standard price includes these things. The tilux interior with wood applications and two-tone artificial leather is completely original. The top layer of the artificial leather is coming off the outer sides of the seat backs and one day two new pieces of artificial leather should be sewn in, but this is not an urgent matter. Because of the purchase of an Opel Commodore A GS/E Coupé, the BMW’s competitor at the time, the collector has decided to sell the BMW again with a heavy heart. This BMW 2000 tilux is a good entry into the New Class and you can experience the driving pleasure straight away. Wilhelm Hofmeister was the main BMW designer of the new class and he had achieved a stroke of genius.

We have examined all cars thoroughly and from this examination we always make three different offers. Our Économie offer for €19,800 refers to the vehicle that has been tested and is roadworthy without a new general inspection. The standard offer for €22,800 also includes a new general inspection and an H-report and the Suprême offer for €27,800 also includes extensive removal of the defects identified during our examination. We would be happy to send you a detailed list of the three offers by email.
