Citroën’s H-model corrugated iron delivery vans were the most common in France. Built from 1947 to 1981, they were a staple of the French road scene for decades. There’s hardly a French film from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s that doesn’t feature such a vehicle. This characterful vehicle was popularly known as a “camionette,” or small truck. Wherever they appear today, they evoke a wave of sympathy that is hard to beat. The rear-opening doors and the resulting casual swing when boarding, with one holding onto the handle on the A-pillar, certainly contribute to this. Their front-wheel-drive design is ingeniously simple, and their robustness is as legendary as their practical utility! It never ceases to amaze what you can transport with a van that’s only 4.35 meters long! As robust and simple as these vehicles’ construction, it’s just as complicated to restore them professionally. The corrugated iron was folded outwards and spot-welded from the outside. Rust forms in the folds, and if restoration is necessary, this means a lot of work for the body shop. Many a painter has also cursed the corrugated iron, which can only be sanded by hand. The same applies to the mechanical system; it’s also simple in principle, but there are hidden left-hand threads here and there, and some things require special tools.
This HY 78 was first registered on October 29, 1976, in la Ville Bachelier, near Nantes. It changed hands once in 1981, and then again in 2010, when it was purchased by a Citroën owner from Siegerland. This Citroën owner was a self-employed vehicle appraiser and worked primarily for DEKRA. His collection also includes a 15 Six, a 2CV, and a DS. All of these cars are as perfectly restored as this HY. It would be very, very difficult to find examples with a better restoration in detail anywhere. The owner has now been retired for over ten years and has bought a smaller house for himself and his wife. The property of the smaller house only allows for a small garage, so he commissioned us to market this incredible HY. If you’re looking for a truly meticulously restored HY in largely original condition, here it is. Our boss drove the car over 50 kilometers through Berlin for a day and says he’s never driven a HY that handles so smoothly and has such good suspension. Incredible.
The vehicle comes with a thick folder containing invoices and many photos of the restoration.
