1974 was a difficult year for Citroën, because the DS was about to be replaced by the CX and everyone knew that a successor to the DS, no matter what car it was, would have a hard time. But that was by no means the only problem that Citroën had to face. In 1974, Citroën was taken over by rival Peugeot, and not only did Peugeot have its 604 luxury sedan almost ready for series production, but it was also clear that Peugeot would stop all Citroën projects with a Wankel engine. Citroën originally wanted to position the CX below the DS series and give the DS a new facelift. In addition, the CX was to be available with a three-disk Wankel engine at a later date. Alongside the now almost unknown M35 with a single-disk Wankel engine and the GS Birotor with a two-disk Wankel engine, the CX Trirotor would have been the third Citroën with a Wankel engine. On August 28, 1974, the new CX was officially presented to the press for the first time. The previous May, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing had become the new President of France, and after the new Peugeot 604 was presented in March 1975 and was Giscard d’Estaing’s preferred government limousine because of its more luxurious rear, the world at Citroën seemed to have fallen apart. After the company had recovered somewhat from the shock, work began on the CX Prestige. The wheelbase of the Prestige was extended by 250 mm and the rear was much more lavishly equipped. The CX Prestige was presented in February 1976, and although the company was impressed by the space in the rear – after all, there was no other production vehicle in the world with more legroom in the rear – not even the Mercedes 600 offered as much legroom – the low roof was criticized. Citroën reacted quickly again and presented the revised Prestige in 1977 with a slightly higher chassis and a significantly higher roof structure, which increased the overall height of the car by 150 mm. This made the CX Prestige, which already had the famous hydropneumatic suspension system patented by Citroën, finally the chauffeur limousine with the most generous rear space of any car on the world market! Citroen’s answer to the Peugeot 604 and the government’s requirements was as quick as it was extensive and successful.

This CX Prestige Injection with automatic transmission comes from a third owner. The first lived in Montauban, just north of Toulouse. In 2002 the car passed into its second hands, an elderly gentleman from Lauzerte, 37 kilometers further north of Montauban. This owner drove the car very little and sold it in 2022 to the third owner in Darvoy, about 200 kilometers south of Paris. The mileage at that time was 106,525. In March 2024, a car dealer friend from Berlin discovered the vehicle, which was still in its completely original condition and with its first paintwork, and had a friend transport the car to Berlin under his own steam. During this trip, the driver was able to thoroughly check that all of the units, including the air conditioning, were working properly. Photos of this trip are available. This car dealer friend brought the car to us for a professional inspection and then left it with us to be sold. The original paintwork is now somewhat dull in places and there are a few minor scratches and dents, but all of this confirms the good original condition of the CX with a current mileage of 113,908 kilometers. When this car was built, the French high-speed train TGV (train à grande vitesse) was celebrating its premiere and many business people were wondering which method of traveling would be more comfortable, traveling in the TGV or in the back of a CX Prestige.
