In March 1961, Jaguar presented the E-Type at the Geneva Motor Show. The model was derived from the D-Type racing car, which in turn was based on a prototype of a planned production model from 1958. Unfortunately, this first prototype was scrapped by Jaguar, much to the regret of fans. The original model of the E-Type was built as a two-seater coupé and as a two-seater roadster. The E-Type impressed with its breathtaking shape and extremely long bonnet, cost around half as much as a Ferrari, but had similar performance. Enzo Ferrari openly admitted that he was also enthusiastic about the car. The car was originally equipped with a 3.8-liter inline six-cylinder with 265 hp. From 1964 there was the 4.2-liter six-cylinder with the same engine power and from 1971 the 5.4-liter V12 with 241 to 272 hp. The twelve-cylinder versions are designed for comfort, while the inline six-cylinder engines are more reminiscent of a sports engine. In 1967, the glass dome above the headlights was omitted and in 1968 the so-called Series 2 was introduced. In 1971 the Series 3 was introduced, which was only available with the V-12 engine. From today’s perspective, it can be said that the E-Type was instrumental in establishing the international reputation of the Jaguar brand. Of all models combined, 38,419 vehicles were built by 1974.
This E-Type V12 convertible with automatic transmission and air conditioning was imported to the USA by Jaguar Heritage in New York on June 23, 1972. On July 1, 1972, the Jaguar was first registered in Hampton, Virginia. On August 17, 1973, the car was registered to its second owner, a doctor in Richmond, also in Virginia. The doctor owned the car until she died some thirty years later. The family then parked the convertible in the garage for another eight years and sold it on April 3, 2013, with a mileage of 44,103, to a classic car dealer in Germany. This dealer overhauled the completely original and well-preserved vehicle, including a new coat of paint in the original color primrose yellow. On May 29, 2015, the car was then sold to a couple in the Taunus. On June 9, 2015, Jaguar Heritage Trust issued a certificate of authenticity for “matching” the engine and transmission numbers. All documents for the vehicle from August 17, 1973 to the present are available and the total mileage to date is only 45,680 miles or 73,545 kilometers. The couple from Taunus are good customers of ours and last year entrusted us with an extremely rare Rosengart Supertraction from 1940, also in its original condition. Since they decided to exchange the Jaguar for another vehicle, we were commissioned to market this unique E-type. An E-type convertible in contemporary primrose yellow.
