The well-known Traction Avant (front-wheel drive) models were presented in 1934 and were built until 1957. They were replaced by the legendary DS, which was then built until 1975. Due to their unrivalled driving characteristics, these cars were soon known as gangster limousines, as there was a rumor that these cars guaranteed gangsters escape from the police. In any case, the cars were as big a sensation in 1934 as the DS was in 1955. The Traction Avant, built as Citroën 7, 11 and 15, covered a power range of 34 to 78 hp. With all variants, you can not only easily keep up with traffic today, but you will also be amazed at the astonishingly fast speed in many places. The front-wheel drive, the hydraulic brakes, the gearbox synchronized in second and third gear, the self-supporting body with a low center of gravity, the wide track, the long wheelbase and a chassis that was built by some manufacturers until the 1990s are all key factors! Today, these cars are among the very few pre-war designs that, after a short period of getting used to, can be driven normally in everyday life! If you can’t imagine that, you should come along for a test drive in one of these models.
This Citroën 11 BN is the first Traction Avant that we sold a year after we founded our company. The car, which had been completely original up to that point, had been dismantled by a friend of ours, repainted, the engine overhauled and completely rebuilt. The headliner, door panels and carpet were also replaced. The seats, however, were reinstalled as they were and have not been reupholstered or re-covered to this day. The entire sheet metal of the body was in 2005 and is still completely original today. The gentleman from Upper Bavaria who bought the car from us in 2005 loved the car and had it perfectly maintained and serviced. Sometimes he even had one of our mechanics travel to Upper Bavaria at his own expense. He now feels too old to drive the car anymore and sold it back to our friend of the house who had carried out the restoration in 2005. He checked the car again, repaired a few things and drove it to Normandy for the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 2024. He had specially obtained a badge that allowed him to move freely between the vehicles at the celebrations. Since a ’49 Traction is visually almost indistinguishable from a pre-war Traction, he was granted this access. In a sense, the car played the role of a French general’s car during the Allied landings in Normandy. Of course, the car was immediately thoroughly cleaned of the sand and sea water of the Wadden Sea. On August 24, 2024, our managing director was invited to a wedding in Straubing in Lower Bavaria and drove the bride and groom to the church and the restaurant in this car. The car has proven its reliability very recently and we are very happy to be able to offer this piece of our own company history again. A star of the parties – Star of Festivités.
