On March 2nd, 2004, Atelier Automobile GmbH was entered in the commercial register of the city of Berlin – so on March 2nd, 2024 we were able to look back on our twenty years of existence.
When the Classic Remise Berlin, then still called Meilenwerk, opened its doors as the first classic car center in the world in May 2003 and all tenants moved in by mid-2004, Atelier Automobile GmbH was the only new company founded in the complex. All other companies took the opportunity to move into the beautiful atmosphere or opened a branch here.
This was the initial situation for which I gave up my position as manager in product development at Ford in Cologne. Task to create something new here. Without a customer base, without professional experience in Berlin and with only one “screwdriver” the start into the unknown began in this beautiful and demanding environment. The beginning was difficult and I can remember that in the beginning we even changed an alternator in an old VW Polo just to make some kind of sales. Of course, that didn’t fit into the house and was not welcomed by some, but the center management showed a lot of understanding and patience and I would like to take this opportunity to thank, on behalf of our entire team, all the employees of the Classic Remise and everyone else here resident companies. Despite all the difficulties, it was a good time in which a common spirit developed throughout the entire center, without which the success of each individual company would not have been possible, nor would the success of the entire Classic Remise Berlin.
Atelier Automobile GmbH was able to grow slowly but steadily and is now one of the companies with the largest vehicle sales in the Classic Remise, with over 50 classic cars sold every year. Since we procure the vast majority of our vehicles ourselves and, in consultation with our customers, refurbish or restore them ourselves before delivery, we can largely take individual wishes into account.
In the 20 years of our company’s history, we have been able to sell a good 900 vehicles and more or less extensively restore almost 250 vehicles on behalf of customers. There are also many vehicles that come to us regularly for customer service or repairs. Since we created a photo catalog for each customer vehicle from the start, we can easily understand which vehicles were in the workshop. As of April 24, 2024, there were 1,109 French and 214 Swedish classic cars in our workshop. Altogether 1,323 French and Swedish classics. You can see which car models we have had in our company’s history in the table at the end of this text.
Around 20% of the cars sold remain in the Berlin area and the other 80% are distributed primarily throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We were also allowed to sell classic cars for customers from Belgium, Denmark, France, Poland, Czech Republic, Holland, Luxembourg, England, Ireland, Croatia, Greece, Monte Carlo, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Greece, Japan, Kenya and Russia , Dubai, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and the USA. We are currently restoring a Citroën DS Cabriolet, a Citroën DS Break, a Peugeot 404 Cabriolet, a Panhard Dyna Z and a Volvo 780.
None of this would have been possible without each and every one of our team and my special thanks go to all of our employees. Thank you for your commitment, your patience and your inventiveness in dealing with the cars, the bosses and of course the customers. You prove every day that passion is what drives you.
We would like to thank all of our customers for their trust and loyalty in us. Especially for your understanding if chips fall while planing, because we are not infallible either. Over the years we have been able to build up an extensive network of suppliers, other specialist companies, museums and specialists. In many cases the business relationship led to fruitful interactions. We would also like to express our gratitude for this.
In order to challenge and promote team spirit, we have no fixed-term employment contracts and no pseudo-self-employed colleagues who work on their own account and we will continue to provide training as long as the economic situation allows it. In the spirit of diversity, we would be happy to be able to attract a female mechanic to join us in a future job advertisement.
People from Germany, France and Poland work in our small team. People from countries that were fighting each other 80 years ago. Our small team consists of people of different generations, different faiths, different sexual orientations, people and, last but not least, people from parts of Germany between which there was a wall 35 years ago and in each of which different political ways of thinking were tried to be taught.
Once you have seen a horizon, you cannot remove it from your memory. On behalf of our team, I wish everyone the broadest possible horizons. A horizon that leads to respect and respect for those who think differently. A horizon that leads to peaceful coexistence and not to a policy of exclusion that drives people to flee. For example, we live the German-French-Polish friendship every day and hope that our politicians will stand up for such friendships and thus provide the framework for a global community based on partnership.
I look forward to the future of Atelier Automobile GmbH with an enlightening team and customers like them!
