Pierre Michelin took over the management of Citroën in 1935, following the death of company founder André Citroën. In order to put the company on a sounder financial footing, they began developing the TPV, the Toute Petite Voiture (French for the very small car). To clarify the purpose of the project, they referred to it internally as an umbrella with four wheels, designed to transport four people and a basket of raw eggs across the country. This made it clear that the vehicle would be extremely affordable, capable of transporting four people and some luggage so comfortably that the eggs would also arrive at their destination safely. The idea for the vehicle came from Pierre Boulanger, while André Lefebvre, who had already developed the legendary Traction Avant (Gangster Limousine), was responsible for its technical development. The design was created by Flaminio Bertoni, who was also the chief stylist of the Traction Avant. Flaminio Bertoni followed the “Duck” with the DS, whose design remains unmatched and unique to this day. The TPV was introduced to the public in 1939, but due to the outbreak of war, only 250 pre-war vehicles were produced. After the war, the project was thoroughly revised and presented in 1948. Series production began in 1949, and by 1990, 3,868,631 convertible sedans and 1,246,335 box vans had been produced. This means that the vehicle remained in production for over 42 years! As early as the 1960s, the vehicle, now known in Germany as the “Duck,” had become a worldwide cult car of the Flower Power and 1968 generation. And it has remained a cult car, or perhaps the cult car par excellence, to this day.

This “Duck” was registered on March 31, 1988, in Verden, Lower Saxony, to a gentleman born in 1945. It was already his third “Duck,” and he was therefore well acquainted with these cars and their vulnerabilities. So, while the vehicle was new, he had the car’s cavity protected and, immediately after delivery, replaced the plastic headlight housings and the plastic radiator grille with high-gloss metal parts from an older 2CV. The car was his second car, to which he was attached out of sentimental feelings, and he only used it for trips into the countryside when the weather was nice. In 1995 and 1997, he temporarily deregistered the car and re-registered it a year later. In 2018, he had the car’s exterior repainted in its original color. It wasn’t until 2022 that he sold it to a gentleman from Berlin. This gentleman from Berlin bought the car for a married couple from Australia who wanted to see Germany from the comfort of a 2CV. The couple, born in 1947 and 1957, fulfilled a dream, and the 2CV never let them down on this vacation. After this trip, the car was checked, serviced, and the seats reupholstered with new, authentic fabrics. The owner had only bought the Citroën for a friends’ vacation and has now asked us to find a new owner for the 2CV, which has only covered 60,799 kilometers. Perhaps you want to explore France with it…?
