Inch’Allah

The Peugeot 404, unveiled in 1960, is one of the greatest designs in automotive history. These cars are considered exceptionally well-balanced: spacious, incredibly easy to see out of, very comfortable, with excellent road holding, effortless to drive, easy to control in critical situations, reasonable fuel consumption, relatively low maintenance costs, and legendary robustness. These qualities made the 404 a global success, and perhaps, after Ford’s Model T, it was the second car that could truly be called a world car. We deliberately exclude the VW Beetle from this count, because although it was also a huge success, its popularity in Africa was limited. This is in stark contrast to the 404, which is still a common sight on the roads of many African countries today. Often worn out and in a deplorable state over the decades, they still perform their daily duties. In Europe, over 2.8 million units were built until 1975, but production continued well beyond that in South America and Africa. The last example wasn’t built in Kenya until 1989! From 1961 onwards, Kugelfischer fuel injection was available as an option, making the 404 the first production car in France with fuel injection. However, the 404 Injection models mostly remained in Europe or North America, just like the coupés and convertibles, which were around 50% more expensive and rarer, with only 17,223 units produced in total. Our company founder and managing director has been driving a 404 convertible as his daily driver in the summer for 22 years and considers it the most reliable car he has ever owned.

This Peugeot 404 Coupé with Kugelfischer fuel injection was first registered in France on October 5, 1966. On September 6, 1990, the car passed into its second ownership, also in France, then on to Portugal, in 1996 to the Netherlands, and in 2013 to Neuss in North Rhine-Westphalia. The gentleman from Neuss had the car largely disassembled, the body extensively restored, and painted in his desired gold metallic color. Documentation of this process includes 255 photos. The mechanical components were overhauled, but the interior was preserved in its original condition. About two years ago, the gentleman from Neuss passed away, and his brother inherited the coupé. Although this brother owns classic cars himself, he wants to sell the Peugeot and entrusted it to us for this purpose. After the vehicle arrived at our workshop, we fitted all four brakes with new brake cylinders and brake shoes and had the engine compartment dry ice blasted. Since our company was founded 22 years ago, we have worked on a total of 89 Peugeot 404s. Although only 10,389 convertibles and 6,837 coupes were produced, 33 of these 89 vehicles were convertibles and nine were coupes. This means we have some experience with these cars. This Peugeot coupe is from the 1967 model year, the same year that French singer Salvatore Adamo released the hit “Inch’Allah” (God willing). That’s why we named the car Inch’Allah.
