After Volvo had established itself as a respected car manufacturer with an excellent reputation in the 1950s and 60s, the completely new 140 model series was introduced in 1966 as the successor to the 120/130 series (Amazon). Initially, only the four-door 144 sedan was available, and in 1967 the two-door 142 sedan and the five-door 145 Torslanda station wagon were added. The successor, the 240, was introduced in 1974. Although the 240 is considered a separate series, in reality, the 240s were extensively revised versions of the 140s, as the passenger compartment, including the windows and doors, was essentially carried over from the 140. Since the 240 series was produced until 1993, it is fair to say that this model was manufactured for over 27 years. In 1976, the American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) selected the Volvo 240 as the benchmark vehicle for setting future safety standards. In 1991, the Insurance Institute (IHI) named the 240 the safest car on the American market.

This Volvo 240 Polar station wagon with air conditioning was first registered in Italy in 1990. Because Italian vehicle tax was very high for cars with engines larger than 2 liters, this Volvo is equipped with a 2-liter B200E engine. The Polar trim level includes central locking, power steering, tinted windows, and the very comfortable wool upholstery on the seats, including the cushions that fit into the open headrest posts. The car is also equipped with a detachable tow hitch. In 2010, the vehicle received Italian historic vehicle certification (albo storico). This clearly well-maintained car has a mileage of 218,684 kilometers, which, with proper care, is about half the expected lifespan of these reliable and robust Volvo engines. A Volvo 240 can still be used without hesitation as an everyday car, and with air conditioning, it’s a pleasure to take a summer holiday trip.
