Quatrelle Authentique

Production of the Renault 4, or more commonly known simply as the R4, began on July 7, 1961, and the car revolutionized Renault’s lineup. Unlike VW, Renault had recognized around ten years earlier that rear-engined vehicles had no future and switched its entire passenger car range from rear-engined to front-engined, front-wheel-drive vehicles. The R4 was the first “new Renault” and also the first passenger car with four doors, a tailgate, and a folding rear seat – thirteen years before the VW Golf. The R4 proved so practical and superior to the competition that 8,135,424 units were built until 1994. Early R4s with the small aluminum grille are now sought-after rarities, and finding one in reasonably good condition is a stroke of luck. Although there were various versions, the R4 L was the best-selling model in the 1960s, and therefore, in France, the car is commonly known as La Quatrelle, or “the Four.”

This particular R4 L was first registered on July 29, 1964, in the South of France. In the 1990s, the Renault, which had remained completely original until then, was sold to Munich and shortly thereafter to someone from Bremen. The owner in Bremen had the still entirely original car repainted. This paint job wasn’t done perfectly, but we think that’s exactly what suits the car so well. The car exudes a very appealing authenticity, and the matte paintwork definitely enhances its character. The interior is still completely original. The headliner has two small tears that can be partially repaired, and the original green leatherette seat covers contrast beautifully with the light blue paint.
