The Peugeot 504, introduced in 1968, was one of Peugeot’s greatest successes, with over 3.3 million units produced in all its variants. Its new, state-of-the-art semi-trailing arm rear suspension gave the cars a comfortable and excellent roadholding, unmatched at the time by any German competitor, including BMW. The legendary reliability of these cars surpasses that of many modern vehicles! Even today, these cars are highly valued everyday vehicles in various countries in Africa, Asia, and South America. Here in Europe, most of these faithful companions have long since been replaced by newer cars. Production of the sedans ceased in 1979 with the introduction of the 505 model. From the outset, both gasoline and diesel engines were offered. Initially, the gasoline engines were exclusively 1.8-liter carburetor or fuel-injected units, which were replaced after the summer holidays of 1970 by two-liter engines that remained virtually unchanged until the end of production. The engine output ranged from 82 to 106 hp for the gasoline engines and from 55 to 65 hp for the 2- and 2.1-liter diesel engines. The design of all 504 models was penned by Pininfarina and can be described as timelessly elegant by today’s standards. All 504 models are as robust as they are fun to drive, comfortable, and very fast for their performance class.

This early 504 with column shift has the 1.8-liter engine, which was replaced by a 2.0-liter engine in the second year and later revived as a particularly robust engine in the 504 L. In the 1969 model year, the L, GL, and Ti badges were not yet displayed on the rear. This vehicle is an early Grand Luxe. As a 504 from the first year of production, it features many details that were changed just one year later. For example, the beautiful blue plastic steering wheel with the off-center Peugeot lion, the side-mounted horn buttons, the silver-colored steering column stalks, the handbrake lever that allows for a fold-out cushion between the seats, and much more. In 2018, we acquired the car from a friend of the original owner’s granddaughter. However, apart from the original, superbly preserved owner’s manual, hardly any documentation could be found, and therefore we unfortunately cannot verify the reported history. The original owner’s family had bought the car for their summer house on the Côte d’Azur, and it was only driven there during the summer holidays when the family vacationed there. Until 2015, the car remained in the garage of the summer house. The family friend took over the Peugeot in 2015, transported it to Lille, and had the exterior paintwork renewed. Since he wasn’t quite sure what to do with the incredibly well-preserved car, he sold it in 2018 with only 39,264 kilometers on the odometer. We then sold the car to a customer in Bavaria. This customer has only driven it 6,538 kilometers since then. During this time, the radiator and ignition lock had to be replaced. Unfortunately, the workshop in Bavaria didn’t know where to source an original radiator and ignition lock, so they installed a more modern radiator and replaced the ignition lock with a switch. While this all works fine, we still offer the option of reinstalling an original radiator and ignition lock as part of our standard service. Functionality aside, we believe a piece of automotive history deserves original parts. In any case, the car has a wonderful presence, and we would be delighted to see it go to a new enthusiast. The current mileage is 45,802 kilometers.
