As the successor to the three-door R15 and R17 coupes, Renault unveiled the Fuego at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show, becoming the first Renault ever to receive the Golden Steering Wheel award. The technical basis for these coupes was the Renault 18 sedan. Initially, the Fuego was available as the TL and GTL with a 1.4-liter engine producing 64 hp, and as the TS and GTS with a 1.7-liter engine producing 97 hp. In October 1980, the TX and GTX followed, featuring a 2-liter engine with 110 hp and a five-speed gearbox. The GTX was generously equipped for its time, including power steering, central locking, electric windows, and headlight wipers. As a successor, in a sense, to the R17 Découvrable, the Fuego was also offered with an electric folding sunroof, an optional extra that was, however, very rarely ordered. From August 1982, the Fuego was also available with a 2.1-liter turbodiesel engine producing 86 hp. This makes the Fuego the first production sports car with a diesel engine! In August 1983, the Fuego Turbo was introduced, featuring a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 132 hp, four disc brakes, a trip computer, and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors. This model was not officially offered with the folding sunroof. 265,257 Renault Fuegos were produced until 1986. Although 24,022 units were sold in Germany, the model has now almost completely disappeared. While its predecessors, the R15 and R17, are currently experiencing a revival, the Fuego has been almost forgotten. Although the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) lists 103 vehicles as still registered, they are rarely seen, as most are languishing in collections. Finding a truly well-preserved and fully roadworthy example is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

This Fuego Turbo was ordered in 1984 by a Renault dealer near Krefeld for his wife. Due to his position as a successful Renault dealer, he insisted on a Turbo with a folding sunroof, a combination that was never officially offered in Europe. According to the vehicle documents, there were subsequent changes of ownership in 1988, 2004, and 2020. We sold this extremely rare Renault in 2023 to a customer who now wishes to part with the car due to a growing family. The exceptionally well-preserved vehicle is fully roadworthy and functional. Apart from a few minor dents, the body is in excellent condition, and the electric folding sunroof works perfectly. The hood with its distinctive “hump” is from a Fuego Turbo diesel, but it suits the character of the turbo gasoline engine perfectly. Turbo fire with open air…
