The Renault 4—often simply referred to as the R4—revolutionized Renault’s model lineup upon its debut in 1961. Unlike Volkswagen, Renault had realized about a decade earlier that rear-engine vehicles had little future, and consequently switched its entire passenger car range from rear-engine layouts to front-wheel drive. The R4 was the first “new Renault” and, furthermore, the first passenger car to feature four doors, a rear hatch, and a folding rear seat—thirteen years ahead of the VW Golf. When the car was unveiled at the IAA in Germany in September 1961, it was clearly one of the year’s most interesting new arrivals and was promptly voted Car of the Year for 1961. Its mechanical robustness is legendary, and the driving pleasure provided by its engine, transmission, suspension, and brakes is something that should be included in the design specifications for modern small cars today. Its spaciousness, practicality, reliability, and driving enjoyment kept the R4 popular from the 1960s through the 1990s. The R4 proved so practical and superior to the competition that, in addition to France, it was manufactured in Angola, Argentina, Belgium, Chile, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Ireland, Yugoslavia, Colombia, Madagascar, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia, Uruguay, and Zaire. In total, there were 28 production sites for this “world car”! Although production had already ceased at almost all other plants, the official end of production in France took place just before the 1992 Christmas holidays. By that time, 8,135,424 vehicles had been built. However, some vehicles continued to be produced in the former Yugoslavia until 1994, when the Balkan conflict brought those activities to a halt as well. Its production run ended after 33 years, but by then, the R4 had become a legend. The final new vehicle delivered to Germany went to Günther Jauch. This R4 was purchased specifically for an extended holiday road trip from Berlin to Seville and back. The current owner bought the vehicle in February 2026 for this journey and brought it to us beforehand to get it road-ready. Our inspection revealed the car to be in excellent condition; aside from a service with an oil change and sealing the carburetor, no other work was required. The trip could thus begin in the spring of 2026. Starting in Berlin, the R4 traversed almost the entire length of Germany, France, and Spain. The journey itself was the goal; the travelers took their time, making various detours to destinations along the way whenever the mood struck. In Spain, the route led from Barcelona, across the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains north of Madrid, all the way to Seville in Andalusia. The bright red R4 seemed to enjoy the trip just as much as its passengers—it just kept going and going. While they weren’t the fastest on the road—especially in the mountains—most other drivers were delighted to see the R4 from Berlin, waving to the occupants and snapping photos or videos. New acquaintances were made, and it turned out to be one of the most wonderful, relaxing vacations they had ever experienced. They returned to Berlin in June, having covered 6,174 kilometers. The Renault held up admirably without a single issue, though it is now due for a service, as well as new drive shafts, wheel bearings, and tie rods. The journey has come to an end, and since the car was purchased solely for this purpose, the owner has entrusted us with selling it. This R4 GTL was built in Slovenia—specifically, in what was then Yugoslavia—and was first registered there on August 2, 1990. Production had to be halted during the Balkan Wars, and today, the Renault 4 is considered a piece of national cultural heritage in Slovenia, just as it is in France. In November 2020, the car—which had been meticulously maintained in Slovenia—was sold to an enthusiast in Wegberg, North Rhine-Westphalia. He subsequently sold the vehicle to the family who used it for their holidays. This well-preserved Renault has a total mileage of 89,263 kilometers and looks forward to covering many more miles with a new owner. Perhaps for another holiday trip…
