When the DS (French for Goddess) was unveiled at the 1955 Paris Motor Show, l’auto-journal ran the headline “The bomb has exploded!” And what a bombshell it was, because by the end of the show, over 80,000 purchase contracts had been signed! In just under twenty years of production, 1,455,746 units of this model were sold. With its unusual design, hydropneumatic suspension, high-pressure brakes, power steering, semi-automatic transmission, engine-mounted spare wheel, and many other features, the DS was probably the biggest sensation in automotive history. For the 1966 model year, the DS Pallas was added to the “regular” DS lineup. Technically identical, the Pallas was distinguished by a more luxurious interior with thicker seats and carpets, and by significantly more chrome trim on the exterior. For the 1967 model year, all models received a redesigned front end with twin headlights behind a single lens, one pair of which were connected to the steering via cables – the famous DS cornering lights were born! At the end of the 1960s, the DS Pallas was the most comfortable car available and was recognized as a benchmark by Mercedes and Jaguar. To this day, we know of no other car that smooths out road imperfections better than a DS.

This DS 23 Pallas represents the ideal DS for many current enthusiasts. It’s a refined DS Pallas with the largest engine, but without fuel injection and a 5-speed manual transmission instead of the semi-automatic. Combined with the exquisite leather interior and tinted windows, it has everything that defines a DS, but without the features that can lead to high maintenance costs. For improved usability in today’s traffic, four retractable seat belts, headrests, and heated front seats have been retrofitted. The period-correct radio also features a connection for modern digital media. The car was commissioned by a gentleman from Baden-Württemberg to undergo a custom restoration by DS specialist Dirk Sassen in Düsseldorf. We know the Sassen company very well, and we owe a significant portion of our expertise with the Citroën DS, acquired over the past twenty years, to Dirk Sassen, and would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sassen team. The restoration work on this car took several years and was only completed almost four years ago. The owner moved from Baden-Württemberg to Potsdam in 2024, and we then sold the car to one of our customers in Berlin. Due to the customer’s wife’s acute illness, he is unable and unwilling to care for the car for the foreseeable future, and therefore we are able to offer this beautiful DS again. The customer from Berlin, himself a doctor, has only driven the car 177 kilometers. We wish his wife a speedy recovery! The DS remains an ideal DS – Déesse Idéale.
