In October 1970, with the GS, Citroën finally closed the gap in its model range between the two-cylinder vehicles (2CV, Dyane, and Ami) and the avant-garde D-models (ID and DS). The model competed with vehicles such as the Peugeot 304, the Renault 16, the Fiat 124, the Opel Ascona A, the Ford Taunus, and the VW 1600. Citroën had previously taken over the innovative French manufacturer Panhard and thus “inherited” the basic concept of a new air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine. Opinions differ as to whether Citroën continued to pursue Panhard’s concept and developed the GS engine from it, or whether the GS engine is a completely Citroën development. We weren’t there either, so we don’t know. Perhaps a visitor to our website knows the historical background and would be kind enough to shed some light on the story! The GS’s four-cylinder boxer engine was a completely new development and was installed exclusively in Citroën’s Grande Série models, the GS and its successor, the GSA. Around 2.5 million GS and GSA models were built by 1986. Its successor was the BX, whose production began in 1982 and featured a water-cooled inline four-cylinder engine. With its spacious body, comparatively upscale interior, and, above all, its hydropneumatic suspension, unique in this class, the GS was superior to its competitors, a fact even acknowledged by German car magazines. From 1973 to 1975, there was even a production version with a 107 hp Wankel engine, the GS Birotor, whose production was discontinued by Peugeot after the takeover of Citroën.

This GS Club with a manual four-speed transmission was first registered in France on July 6, 1976. In 2014, the car was brought to Germany by a collector from North Rhine-Westphalia; there’s even a photo of this delivery trip. After he registered the car in 2016, some children playing sat on the roof, denting it. The owner found the repair too costly, and so the car came to us with the dented roof. We then had the car mechanically overhauled and repainted to repair the dents in the roof. We then sold it to a good customer in the Lower Rhine region who occasionally drove the car in nice weather. In 2023, he brought the car back to us, and we sold it to a gentleman from Baden-Württemberg. Since then, he has driven about 3,500 kilometers with the car and, as he says, enjoyed every single kilometer. Unfortunately, he now has to undergo a medical operation and previously drove the vehicle about 600 kilometers to Berlin under his own power to market it again. The GS completed this journey in midsummer temperatures without any problems, and he’s very sorry to be leaving the car with us again. Apart from the new exterior paint, the car is still in its original condition. The underbody is completely untouched and requires no work. When the car was built, Abba was enjoying a huge hit with their song “Fernando,” and since this orange Citroën so perfectly exudes the flair of the 1970s, we’re calling it Fernando. Whenever this song plays on your car radio in the future, you might always think of us…
