The Peugeot 404 is, after the Ford Model T, the second car that can be called a truly global car. It was built in its home country of France from 1960 to 1975 and is one of the most successful mid-size cars ever. It was even this very model that helped Peugeot gain a real foothold in the German market. But not only in Germany – the car was a global success, and many examples can still be seen in daily use in developing and emerging countries today. While they are usually characterized by heavy use there, the cars appear technically indestructible and are among the most robust the automotive industry has ever produced. 1,847,568 examples were built in France. Outside of France, the car was produced in various African countries, as well as in Argentina, Canada, and Chile. The last example was built in Kenya as recently as 1991. Worldwide production totals 2,885,374 vehicles. All 404 models drive wonderfully lightly, have solid roadholding and good suspension comfort. The steering is precise, the brakes excellent, the space is generous, and the body’s visibility is probably the best ever built. From the driver’s seat, you can see the lamp trim rings at the front and the tips of the taillights at the rear, and since the front and rear sections taper downwards, you can maneuver with centimeter precision without the need for parking assistance. Always a source of joy and excitement! Starting in 1962, a Kugelfischer fuel injection system was offered as an option, making the car the first French production car with fuel injection.
This 404 is a very early Super-Luxe, in the exact color combination in which it was introduced in 1962. We acquired the car in 2016 from a collector in the South of France in largely original condition. Before we received it, the car was re-registered in France after a long period of storage. Of course, any damage from storage was repaired and the paintwork sealed with a layer of clear varnish. The chassis and engine numbers match, meaning the original factory-installed engine is still installed. In 2017, we sold the car to a customer from Berlin, who has since driven 5,486 kilometers. The customer is very happy with the car, but since she owns several classic cars, she asked us to sell the 404 again. As is typical for a very early 404, the bumper ends don’t yet have rubber pads, and the reflectors are also made of real glass. The elaborate hubcaps belong to the early Super-Luxe and are rarely found in this condition.
Our economy offer for €20,200 refers to the inspected and roadworthy vehicle with a H-certificate and a general inspection valid until April 2027, as well as new front wheel brake cylinders. Our standard offer for €24,700 also includes a major service with an oil change, new radiator hoses, and new classic Michelin XAS tires. The Supreme offer for €29,500 includes a new windshield, a non-fading steering wheel, dry ice cleaning of the engine compartment, and cavity and underbody protection.
