After VW launched the Beetle-based Karmann-Ghia Type 14 in 1955, the Type 3 was launched in 1961, initially as the 1500, then as the 1500 S, and finally as the 1600. A coupé, the so-called “big Karmann,” or officially the Type 34, was also developed based on the Type 3. The “big” Karmann was never intended as a replacement for the “small” Karmann; rather, it was a high-quality, elegant coupé that was introduced almost simultaneously with the Type 3, as the VW 1500 Karmann-Ghia. In 1963, it became the 1600 Karmann-Ghia, and in 1965, the 1600 L Karmann-Ghia. Front disc brakes were introduced in 1966, followed by 12-volt on-board voltage and a dual-circuit braking system in 1967. Starting in 1968, an automatic transmission combined with a semi-trailing arm rear axle was offered for an additional charge. The semi-trailing arm axle then became standard in 1969, the final model year, even for cars with manual transmissions. A convertible version was originally planned, but production was halted after probably a dozen pre-production vehicles had been built. A total of 42,505 examples of this premium 1960s VW were built. After these cars played a minor role in the classic car scene for a long time, demand has increased enormously in the last ten years. Only well-preserved and unmodified examples are hard to find.
This relatively late “big” Karmann with automatic transmission was lent to us by a customer for sale. Because the owner recently purchased a 1928 Chenard et Walcker Y3, and this almost 100-year-old vehicle requires a lot of attention, he has decided, with a heavy heart, to sell the Karmann. He bought the Karmann in 2021 and then invested €13,396.92 in various work. Unfortunately, there are no records of the mileage, but the condition of many details, especially the interior, makes a mileage of 118,200 km seem realistic. From every perspective, the car appears exceptionally well preserved and, above all, very, very original. Our customer has driven the car a good 2,000 km in the last few summers and, as he himself says, he has enjoyed every kilometer.
Our Economy offer for €48,500 refers to the inspected, fully roadworthy vehicle with a H-certificate and a general inspection valid until July 2026. The Standard offer for €50,200 also includes an inspection with oil change and a new general inspection. You will find out what our Supreme offer for €58,900 includes when we send you the offer proposals.
