In 1965, Peugeot introduced the 204 series, a lower-mid-range vehicle featuring a concept that would set a global benchmark. Its compact body offered interior spaciousness previously found only in much larger vehicles. This was made possible by the transversely mounted front engine and the associated front-wheel-drive layout. At the same time, this configuration allowed for a relatively simple yet highly efficient suspension geometry, which in turn set new standards for comfort and handling. In 1969, the 304 series was launched alongside the 204; while essentially identical in construction, it featured a longer trunk (on the sedan version), restyled front-end bodywork, and increased power output. In Germany, the model competed against the likes of the Opel Ascona A, Ford Taunus, and first-generation VW Passat, remaining in production until 1979. Between 1970 and 1975, a compact yet highly elegant coupé version was available, featuring a rear hatch and a folding rear seat. As the “S” model equipped with twin carburetors, the car offers genuine driving pleasure; nearly sixty years after its debut, it continues to surprise with its dynamic handling characteristics. Today, few of these cars have survived, and the remaining examples are almost all in a state of neglect or have been heavily modified.
This Peugeot 304 S Coupé was first registered in Cologne on February 14, 1973. It remained with its original owner until June 1991—at which point the odometer read 56,432 km—before being purchased by a Peugeot enthusiast from Düsseldorf due to its exceptionally well-preserved condition. The new owner entered the car in a Peugeot concours d’elegance in the exact condition in which he had bought it, winning third prize from a jury that included Christian Peugeot. A year later, the enthusiast had completely stripped down the already sensational car; he had the underbody, wheel arches, and inner fender panels stripped of paint, had the car repainted, and replaced any component that didn’t look brand new with a new part. The front suspension components and the subframe were galvanized and then painted in the original color. The edges of the hood were flame-galvanized, and the hood was painted to match the original specifications—including the two-tone finish on the underside. The coupé was restored to the kind of pristine condition Peugeot would have envisioned at its 1970 press launch. A “photo album for a picture-perfect car” documents the entire process, describing every step with images and text. This work took place in 1992–93, involving an investment of 27,313.83 DM in parts and around 2,000 hours of labor. In 1998, the owner from Düsseldorf sold the vehicle to a professional dealer specializing exclusively in spare parts for classic Peugeots of the “04” series (models ranging from the 104 to the 604). We first saw the car at his premises in 2012 and would have loved to take it home immediately. It wasn’t until 2019 that the parts dealer decided to sell the coupé, at which point we promptly brought it to Berlin. At that time, the odometer showed 72,347 kilometers. We subsequently sold the Peugeot to an executive at a major German industrial company; he registered the car at his primary residence in Germany but kept it at his summer home in the south of France. He has driven it 4,496 km since then, always treating the vehicle with care and ensuring it received professional maintenance. Among other things, he had the clutch replaced and had one fender and the tailgate repainted—not because they were rusty, but simply because they had sustained minor scratches. The former executive no longer spends much time in France and is convinced that the car does not deserve to sit there gathering dust. Consequently, he brought the car back to Berlin so we could market it once more. This sensational Peugeot 304 S Coupé comes with full documentation and is guaranteed to turn heads while exuding immense charm. It deserves to continue being perfectly maintained and treated with care.
We subject every vehicle to a systematic inspection—covering everything from the bodywork and engine to the electrical system. Based on this, we prepare three different proposals. You decide which option suits you best.
Économie – €22,500
Inspected, roadworthy vehicle featuring a brand-new rear exhaust silencer, certification for historic vehicle status (*H-Gutachten*), and a mandatory inspection (TÜV) valid until May 2027.
Standard – €24,600
Includes a major service with an oil change, refurbished rear brakes, a new horn, and a fresh mandatory inspection.
Suprême – €26,600
Includes everything above, plus a new fuel level sender (the current one consistently shows an incorrect, low reading) and a wax-based cavity and underbody preservation treatment.
We would be happy to send you the details of these three proposals. Alternatively, simply give us a call, and we can explain everything to you personally.
